Haydn Symphony No 99
Beethoven Symphony No 1
Leeds Haydn Players' own resident critic says : The last concert, on 9th October 2011, was very much enjoyed by both orchestra and audience. Audience members since then, have made a point of saying how much they enjoyed the concert and others have sent emails saying the same. So its safe to say that everyone enjoyed themselves.
The Clothworkers Hall at the University in Leeds was a good venue, but orchestra and audience also like being in the intimate atmosphere of their usual venue at 7 Arts in Chapel Allerton. David Waterman was pleased with the standard reached, with the help of his inspired teaching and conducting.
The Beethoven Romance in F was beautifully played by Katharine Gowers and sensitively accompanied. Haydn's Symphony No 99 in Eb was played so that the great contrasts of mood and speed were convincingly brought out and the lovely tone in the opening bars was matched by the exhilarating attack and skill in the last exuberant presto.
Beethoven's first Symphony completed the concert. Very different and yet very similar to the Haydn, it is a young man's work and the Leeds Haydn Players brought out its mixture of energy, playfulness and drama. One audience member kindly said he had never enjoyed it more! What more could anyone wish ?
